We entered a warm room full of colour and texture, a room where magic and invention seemed possible, a room where we could travel further into a land of our own creation.
The Studio is the creative hub of the Little White Alice Project. It is a beautiful cedar building with a stunning zinc roof and is a work of art in itself. Inside it is a light and airy vaulted 6m x 9m space with 20 mile views over Stithians Lake to St Austell. The Studio is heated by a wood burning stove and has a full size Belfast sink and a small kitchen.
The Studio has facilities for a wide range of general art and craft activities with an emphasis on sustainable and traditional crafts including: basket making (making use of our own grown willows), mosaic making, silk painting, felt making and printmaking.
The landscape around Little White Alice is a haven of inspiration for artists and painters alike. The huge slabs of granite that make up the walls of the fields are very unusual in their size and magnitude and we have drawn on them to create our garden landscapes, fire pit and pool area. There are many nooks and crannies and a huge collection of hardy exotic plants which we are sure will attract many artists to pick up their sketchbooks or cameras.
There are opportunities to make use of the studio space and have private tuition and support from Rosie to make your own art work or crafted souvenirs during your holiday. Through craft Rosie passionately believes that anyone regardless of age or experience can be shown simple techniques and be enabled to create beyond their own expectations. Throughout the year she runs a range of craft sessions for guests of all ages which have so far been met with great enthusiasm and seen the production of many willow boats, hearts and flowers and family mosaics, little White Alice figures, etc. Please contact Rosie by email or phone to discuss your requirements and she can tailor a session to meet you or your families needs. Sessions start from £7.50 for children and £15.00 for adults including materials. Creative sessions usually last for at least two hours but may be shorter or longer depending on your age and ability. (so far we have had 18 month olds to 80 year olds working in our studio)
During winter months Lin Lovekins runs a range of Basket making workshops for beginners and Improvers in our flexible space and it also adapts to become a yoga space for our Yoga Retreats We are hoping to expand further with more community based courses running throughout the year. Penmarth WI are frequent visitors and have taken part in feltmaking, silk painting and willow workshops. Rosie also uses the quieter times to craft tea cosies, smaller baskets, and seasonal decorations for the cottages and gardens.
All of the artworks and crafts displayed around Little White Alice have been created in The Studio or by local artists. Many are available for purchase. Please do ask us if there is a painting or artwork that you might like to buy.
The building is home not only to the office and management of Little White Alice but also houses Alice Arts and Meon Ventures.
